Creative Photography – A renaissance photoshoot

I love a creative photography challenge! Captain Kuppa T and the Zeppelin Crew got in contact for a photoshoot for the cover of their new album – titled “Lock-in” in March 2020.  The band wanted a renaissance style shoot for their CD artwork and publicity and we had a really fun afternoon talking these in their local in Oxford!

There was so much energy and laughter – it was an absolute blast! Little did we know how accurate the title of the Album would be. I had great fun planning and editing the photos for the renaissance style and I was delighted with how they turned out! Dressing the set was really enjoyable and I loved the pantomime swan!

We wanted something similar to a painted effect, and we used a single diffused flash through a grid and softbox to give the definition. This light was placed to the side and moved between 45 and 60 degrees to the subjects. Composition was focused on the band members with the other models placed at different heights to reflect the arrangement used in renaissance paintings. The editing was much stronger than my usual approach, but was still done entirely in Lightroom. I developed a preset with a high contrast between the highlights and shadows which also and a very small adjustment to the overall contrast to get the painted look.
